Immelman wins Masters

Trevor Immelman did just enough to preserve his first major, winning the Masters by 3 strokes over Tiger Woods. Immelman went into the round leading by 2 over Brandt Snedeker at -11, and took advantage of many mistakes to pull of the victory. Steve Flesch as well as Snedeker were well within reach at the start of the day, but too many bogeys throughout the final round sunk their chances. Immelman finished with a round of 75, including a water ball on the par 3 16th that lead to a double bogey to make things somewhat interesting, especially with Tiger lingering.

Immelman prevailed on the final two holes to close out his final round, sending him into a jubilant celebration. Before this unlikely win, he only had one previous PGA tour victory. He held it together all week to put him in the position that he was in, hitting a great majority of fairways and greens throughout the tournament. He stretched his lead to six early in the round, mostly because of the faltering of opponents.

Snedecker finished at -4, four shots back and tied for third with Stewart Cink. Snedecker finished with 9 bogeys in the round, resulting in a +5 77. Steve Flesch, who started the day 3 shots back at -8, finished at -2, shooting a 78.

The rest of the field couldn’t make any moves as well. Only one of the golfers that finished in the top ten in the Masters shot in the 60’s (Miguel Angel Jimenez, 69), leading to a tournament that was Immelman’s to lose.

Tiger Woods had many an opportunity to make a move, but continuously missed some crucial birdie and par putts throughout the round that doomed his chance for a 5th Masters title.

    Was Tiger lingering or lurking?

Larry I think he was lingering. Didn’t seem to have much of anything going on the final day to mount any sort of comeback. He played a pretty good round, but he didn’t make the putts he usually makes to give him momentum, therefore he couldn’t make that finla push that was needed. The final score looked closer than what actually transpired out on the course. If Immelman didn’t double bogey the 16th it would have been a 5 shot win, and if players such as Steve Flesch and Paul Casey didn’t struggle as mightilty as they did he woud not have finished 2nd. So I think that lingering was the right description of his presence in the final round.

    Swami,
I agree, Tiger couldn’t get it going.
Especially Sunday at the Masters, it ain’t over until it’s over! It hard to not fall into the trap that David Ferhety(sp) did on the broadcast. Before Immelman played 16, he mentioned how the water doesn’t come into play for these guys on that hole!
The Masters is unique in that all of the players know exactly what has happened on which hole over the last 30 years or so. How they block out the incredible collapse of Seve, Greg, and many other great players is a huge challenge! A few years ago Tom Watson was in position for a late career green jacket until his tee shot on 18 ended up stymied in the trees to the right!
    Anyway, he’ll be back!!
